Dear Angel of Mercy,

Mommy is beter today and says she is not so scared no more. I am still scared sometimes but not as much becuase I know you are watching over me now for sure. Mommy and me are going to make pop corn and watch the Wissard of Oz on TV and have hot chocklat.

“I’m just lucky the woman is totally anal. She kept copies of all her records and didn’t get rid of them when she retired. She’s got them all labeled and alphabetized, sealed in plastic tubs and arranged on shelves in her garage.” Sukey shook her head, and her red curls, which she had styled so they looked like loose springs, bobbed and danced.

I hadn’t told her about yesterday yet. She had bounced into the office in such a good mood, justifiably proud of the results of her first “interrogation.” I was trying to focus on what she was telling me, but lack of sleep, combined with the greasy feel of loathing that had clung to me since I left Anna and Grace the evening before, made me a poor listener.

“I had to take everything to a Kinko’s and make copies, and bring them all right back. I was terrified I would get something out of order, and it’s a good thing I was careful, because she inspected every file folder when I got back, one by one.”

She plunked a pile of papers down in front of me, and I jumped, spilling coffee.

“Geeze, Mercy,” she said, yanking back her precious papers to avoid the mess, “you’re really on edge this morning. What’s going on?”

I got up and retrieved paper towels from under the alcove sink. “My mind is elsewhere, I’m afraid. I need to get it together, though, because my clients are going to start arriving soon.”

“Anything I can help with?”

I thought about it, and my eyes fell on the bright yellow cover of The Exciting World of Private Investigation, which held pride of place next to the computer keyboard.

“Yes, actually there is. I’m wondering if you can use your newfound skills to help me track someone down.”

“Sure. You can find anything on the Internet. What’s the name?”

“Phillip Green. And I have an address for him. But he hasn’t been staying there for a week or two, so what I’m really trying to find is if he owns any other property, maybe a warehouse or something.”

After starting to call Rose and hanging up without leaving a message—twice—I had found myself in the car at about eleven the night before, driving toward the suburban address Anna had provided. I’m not sure what I thought I was going to do when I got there, but I had told myself it wouldn’t hurt to just drive past and get a look at the place.

It was an unremarkable house in a very average neighborhood, the only notable difference between it and its neighbors being an absence of landscaping. The other houses on the cul-de-sac had shrubs and ornamental palms, banners and decorative mailboxes.
